2017 has been nothing short of stratospheric year for my band Flying Machines so far! We’ve just completed a 24 date UK tour which was supported by Arts Council England and ended with a sold out headline gig at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club. Champagne corks were flying everywhere by the time we stumbled off that legendary stage…It was the dream way to end what has been quite simply the most fun that I’ve ever had on the road touring. We’ve been all over the place, from St Ives to Aberdeen and pretty much everywhere in-between and I’d like to thank everyone who has supported our campaign, we just couldn’t be happier with how it has all gone down.
In other news, I’m really looking forward to some releases coming out later this year that I was fortunate enough to play on. Keep an ear to the ground for fantastic debut albums from Sam Rapley’s Fabled, Pete Lee and the Tom Millar Quartet – all really wonderful and unique projects that I’m sure are going to leave their mark. More news on all of these coming soon.
Well, that’s about all for now folks, thanks for stopping by. I thought I’d leave you with this live video from the Flying Machines tour, featuring the rip-roaringly ridiculous Rob Mullarkey stepping in for Conor on electric bass. Enjoy!
I’m absolutely chuffed to bits to declare once and for all that the ‘Flying Machines’ debut album is officially available to purchase in physical and digital formats. Hurrah! This is such an incredible feeling. Please follow the link below to get some glory-jazz-rock that goes at Mach 2 in your life. We all really hope that you enjoy the music as much as we have enjoyed making it. Thank you for your support!
I’m absolutely delighted to announce that the Flying Machines Kickstarter campaign has been nothing short of a total triumph, a whopping great £3,647 raised thanks to the generosity of 117 backers. We never doubted it for a second
We attracted a lot of great press throughout the campaign which really helped us to get the word out, big thanks to London Jazz News and Leeds College of Music for some fantastic features!
Things have been moving quickly ever since and we’re just about ready to sign off on the master which is sounding every bit as impactful and dynamic as we could have hoped for. Looking forward to sharing this with the rest of the world, stay tuned!
I’m so excited to announce that the Flying Machines Kickstarter campaign is well and truly underway. We’ve already had some extremely generous backers and Kickstarter have made us a ‘Project that we love’. Hurrah! If you’ve been checking back at this page often or are a fan of the band then I really hope you’ll consider helping us out. Thanks!
This is the place to be for anything and everything related to Flying Machines. It’s a visual feast, but don’t be so distracted by those majestic photos that you forget to sign up to the mailing list. 😉
Also check back here soon for our kickstarter video which we’ll be launching very soon, featuring extracts from the debut album. It’s been a long time in the making and I’m really thrilled with how this video has come together. EXCITED.
It’s been a while in the making, an indulgent quest for perfection in sound design, but I’m pleased to finally announce that the mixes for the album are sounding like they did in our wildest dreams. You just can’t rush a good mix.
We’re looking forward to sharing more exciting news regarding the release with you all very soon and we have a brand spanking new website in the pipeline but in the meantime, just keep soaring.
This will be our last gig in London this year so please do pop along! Tickets/info here:
See you out there x
It gives me tremendous pleasure to announce that we’ve recorded our debut album! It wasn’t without a few heart in the mouth moments. We’d barely had time to draw breath from weeks of rehearsing in the nether regions of Willesden Green by the time those three days in the studio came round and my word, there was a lot to do. There was the big, red, throbbing red light that I’d seen so many times in my dreams.
“To hell with it!” we cried. It was time to strap our cojones back on and play our cotton socks off. We did, and I’m just bursting to get it all mixed, shiny and into your headphones. Right now, we’re having a ball layering on the icing; we’ve got the shimmering rhodes pads, the double tracked guitars, the fancy analogue delays, hell, there’s more digitech whammy action than a Rage Against the Machine album. So for goodness sake, please stay tuned
I’m hugely excited to announce that we’ll be recording my debut album this August at the Chairworks studio in Castleford. Hurrah, hurrah! It has been a long time coming and we are chomping at the bit to get this music down now, especially coming off the back of such a wonderful gig at the Vortex last week.
Also looking forward to welcoming some new faces into the team for this particular session, including engineer/mixing wizard Tim Thomas who’ll be bringing our sound to thunderous, dizzying new heights and my very good friend and saxophonist extraordinaire Josh Arcoleo, taking the role of producer and general ‘wise counsel’. Angels on our shoulders.

Staying true to jazz musician form, I’ve utterly neglected to keep this vital page updated in recent months. While this has probably gone unnoticed by the vast majority of the general population, for all you ardent, ‘semi-improvised-glory-rock’ fans and promoters out there, I’m thrilled to take to the promotional fog horn once more with the following call to arms; WE HAVE NEWS! Bucketloads of the bloody stuff.
First and foremost, after much toing and froing with the delightful James Hamilton from New Jazz Records, I’m very excited to share two tracks from a gig of ours he recorded at Sela Bar in Leeds last year. He’s done a stupendous job of capturing the vibe of the band while eliminating extraneous noise from boisterous diners and the small mosh pit that emerged in front of the stage.

If that wasn’t enough, here’s a live video of ‘Lighter than Air’ from our very first gig at the Jazz Nursery way back in September last year. It features Josh Blackmore deputising rather wonderfully on drums. Bless Pete Lee and his trusty iPhone.
I can feel an album coming on…….
Well, we’ve reached the last instalment of this little series of promo vids and probably just as well really, quite enough of my gurn faces for the time being.
We’ll have some live recordings up any day now but for now, pour yourself a glass of your favourite Chardonnay, kick off those working shoes and enjoy this musical throwback to the days of 80s instrumental hair metal and tight spandex pants.
Here’s a lovely review of our first video, ‘Tracks’.
Here’s a nice pic of us just after our Sela Bar gig. Conor’s face tells the whole story really. Such was the feeling of euphoria after our second set that we couldn’t help but celebrate in style afterwards, knocking back a good number of ruggedly northern ales before pounding the streets of Leeds in search of a 24hr McDonalds and a box of their finest, golden, crispy nuggets. Hard to imagine a more fitting end to the evening.
I’m also thrilled to report that James Hamilton from newjazzrecords.co.uk came down and recorded the gig so we’re looking forward to having a listen to that and putting some new stuff up on the site soon, stay tuned!
All be it early days, we’ve been blown away by all the lovely feedback we’ve received on our travels so far, thanks and big cuddles to everyone who has come out to support our first few steps in this crazy world of showbiz.
On November 2nd we’ll be heading to the Cori Tap in Bristol, followed by another London date at the Green Note in Camden on the 18th as part of the London Jazz Festival, alongside Rick Simpson’s Klammer. We are very excited about that one! LJF events tend to be packed out, honest, so please book tickets early to avoid disappointment!
We’ll be on first around 8pm, you can book tickets here:
I’m very excited to announce the release of our new video ‘Lighter than Air’. Hope you enjoy it!
There’ll be more music coming soon but for now we are busy rehearsing again, keep an eye on the gigs page as we hope to be adding lots more dates soon.
Welcome to my new site!
I’m very pleased to announce the first of a series of videos that I recorded with my band recently, featuring Matt Robinson on piano/keys, Conor Chaplin on bass and Dave Hamblett on drums. We’ve been rehearsing and tinkering away with this music for a while now so it feels great to finally be getting it out there. More to come soon!
We’ll be playing our first gig at the Jazz Nursery on the 25th September with Josh Blackmore stepping in for Dave on drums. Then we’ll be at Camden’s Con Cellar Bar, one of my favourite venues, on the 3rd October. Hope to see some of you there.
